We do not give clients source files unless pre-agreed prior to beginning the work. This includes Photoshop, Indesign, illustrator, Premiere or any other source files.
The exceptions are as follows:
- Anywhere we are giving up minimal IP and it is in the interest of the client relationship to hand over files
- Simple, clean files for the client to use (eg. business cards, order forms etc)
- Cleaned up Photoshop files for web development
- Working files for production houses (eg. video production) or trade (eg. signage)
Having conversations about source files can be difficult. Often clients don’t understand this as they see the files as having already been paid for. Phrases that are helpful include:
- The source files are property of Big Red Dog
- The final PDF artwork files are yours (or equivalent file format)
- We can arrange for a version of the source files to be transferred to you, we will need to quote on that
If a client expresses interest in purchasing source files, speak to the Client Manager.
